Wikipedia and Online Reputation: What You Can and Cannot Do

Wikipedia articles rank on the first page for almost every significant brand and public figure. Understanding Wikipedia’s rules—and the strict limits on what subjects and editors can do—is essential for managing your reputation there.

Why Wikipedia Matters for Reputation

Wikipedia articles about companies and individuals consistently appear in the top three search results, often holding the third position after the official website and a news source. Because Wikipedia has extraordinary domain authority and because readers often consider it more objective than official sources, a Wikipedia article about you or your company carries significant reputational weight. What your Wikipedia article says shapes how millions of researchers, journalists, potential partners, and customers understand you.

The Notability Requirement

Not everyone and every company is entitled to a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia’s notability guidelines require that a subject has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. This means coverage in major newspapers, books, academic publications, or well-established industry press—not press releases, company websites, or low-authority blogs. If you don’t meet the notability threshold, a Wikipedia article created about you may be nominated for deletion.

Conflicts of Interest and the Rules Around Self-Editing

Wikipedia has strict policies around conflicts of interest. You are strongly discouraged from directly editing articles about yourself, your company, or your employer. Doing so—especially to present information favorably or remove negative information—frequently results in those edits being reverted. Wikipedia has dedicated COI enforcement teams who are expert at identifying and reversing promotional edits. The appropriate pathway for someone with a conflict of interest is to use the talk page to suggest changes, not to make changes directly.

Legitimate Ways to Improve Your Wikipedia Presence

When your Wikipedia article contains factual errors, the proper approach is to document the error on the talk page with citations to reliable sources that demonstrate the correct information. For serious errors, hiring a Wikipedia-experienced editor who understands COI policies and can navigate the community process is the most reliable path. Ensure that all reliable, notable coverage of your company or person is properly cited in the article—legitimate positive coverage belongs in the article, and its absence may simply be because no editor has added it yet.
